More than 176,000 people – 176,079 to be exact – have been infected with the coronavirus in this country in the past seven days, 49,000 of them in the federal capital alone. However, with 1.92 million inhabitants, Vienna is the state with the highest population. In terms of seven-day incidence (number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants), Tyrol is ahead with 2,796.5 and Salzburg with 2,638.1. Vienna holds at 2,551.3, and Austria as a whole at 1,971.3.
For Austria, as well as Salzburg and Vienna, these are record incidences in what is now nearly a two-year pandemic, according to the updated Corona dashboard from the Agency for Health and Food Safety (AGES) (as of 2 p.m. Monday). Tyrol was already above the current mark once in the Omicron wave. Tyrol is also home to the two districts with the highest incidence in Austria, Landeck and Imst in the Oberland, which are above the 4,000 mark. Landeck, with the winter sports resorts of Ischgl and St. Anton am Arlberg, currently records a seven-day incidence of 4,298.0, while Imst, with Sölden, which is also popular with tourists, comes in at 4,087.2. Of the nine Tyrolean districts, there are only two with an incidence below the 3,000 mark, namely Osttirol and Außerfern.
